二　防衛手段としての贖罪



1. You can do anything I ask.
　あなたは、私が求めることであれば、どのようなことでも行うことができます。

　I have asked you to perform miracles, and have made it clear that miracles are natural, corrective, healing and universal.
　私は、あなたに奇跡を行うようにと求めてきました。また、奇跡は自然に起こるものであり、誤りを修正して欠乏を癒す普遍的なものであることも明らかにしてきました。

　There is nothing they cannot do, but they cannot be performed in the spirit of doubt or fear.
　奇跡にできないことは何ひとつありません。しかし、疑いや恐れを抱く精神状態では、奇跡は起こせません。

　When you are afraid of anything, you are acknowledging its power to hurt you.
　あなたが何かを恐れるとき、あなたは自分が恐れているその何かに自分を傷つける力があることを承認しています。

　Remember that where your heart is, there is your treasure also.
　あなたが思いを寄せるところにあなたの宝もあることを覚えておいてください。

　You believe in what you value.
　あなたは、自分が評価するもののことを信じます。

　If you are afraid you will inevitably value wrongly, and by endowing all thoughts with equal power will inevitably destroy peace.
　もしあなたが恐れを抱いているなら、あなたは間違って評価することを避けられないでしょう。そうなると、あなたはどんな想念にも同等の力を与えてしまい、それによって避けようもなく、心の平安が崩れてしまいます。

　That is why the Bible speaks of "the peace of God which passeth understanding. "
　これこそ、聖書が「人知を越える神の平安」について述べる理由です。

　This peace is totally incapable of being shaken by errors of any kind.
　神の平安は、いかなる種類の誤りによってもまったく揺るぎません。

　It denies the ability of anything not of God to affect you.
　神の平安は、何であれ、神に属さないものがあなたに影響を及ぼす力を持つことを否定します。

　This is the proper use of denial.
　これこそ、適切な否認の用い方です。

　It is not used to hide anything, but to correct error.
　適切な否認は、何かを隠すためではなく、誤りを正すために用いられます。

　It brings all error into the light, and since error and darkness are the same, it corrects error automatically.
　適切な否認は、すべての誤りを光の中へともたらします。そして、誤りと闇とは同じものなので、適切な否認は自動的に誤りを修正します。



2. True denial is a powerful protective device.
　真の否認は、強力な保護の手段となります。

　You can and should deny any belief that error can hurt you.
　あなたは、どんなものであれ、誤りが自分を傷つけることができるという信念を否認できるし、否認すべきです。

　This kind of denial is not a concealment but a correction.
　こんなふうに否認するのは、隠蔽することではなく、修正することです。

　Your right mind depends on it.
　あなたの心の正しさは、この真の否認をなしうるかどうかにかかっています。

　Denial of error is a strong defense of truth, but denial of truth results in miscreation, the projections of the ego.
　誤りを否認することは、真理の強力な防衛手段です。しかし逆に、真理を否認することは、誤った創造であるエゴの投影として結実します。

　In the service of the right mind the denial of error frees the mind, and re-establishes the freedom of the will.
　正しい心の働きとして誤りを否認することは心を解放し、意志の自由を確立し直します。

　When the will is really free it cannot miscreate, because it recognizes only truth.
　意志が真に自由なら、その意志が誤って創造することはありえません。なぜなら、自由な意志はただ真理のみを認めるからです。



3. You can defend truth as well as error.
　あなたは、誤りを防衛できるのと同じように、真理を防衛することもできます。

　The means are easier to understand after the value of the goal is firmly established.
　目標の価値をしっかりと確認したあとなら、その手段を理解するのも容易になります。

　It is a question of what it is for.
　それは、何のために防衛するのかという問題です。

　Everyone defends his treasure, and will do so automatically.
　誰もがみな、自分が大切にする宝ものを守ろうとします。それも無意識に守ろうとするでしょう。

　The real questions are, what do you treasure, and how much do you treasure it?
　真の問題は、あなたが何を宝とするのか、そして、あなたがその宝をどれほど大切にするのかです。

　Once you have learned to consider these questions and to bring them into all your actions, you will have little difficulty in clarifying the means.
　これらの質問をまず考慮したうえで、質問の結果を自分の行動に反映することをひとたび習得したなら、あなたは何の苦も迷いもなくその手段を活用できるようになるでしょう。

　The means are available whenever you ask.
　あなたが求めさえすれば、いつでもその手段は利用できるようになっているからです。

　You can, however, save time if you do not protract this step unduly.
　いずれにせよ、もしこの段階を必要以上に長引かせなければ、あなたは時間を省くことができます。

　The correct focus will shorten it immeasurably.
　正しく焦点を合わせれば、時間を計り知れないほど短縮できるはずです。



4. The Atonement is the only defense that cannot be used destructively because it is not a device you made.
　贖罪こそ、破壊的に用いることのできない唯一の防衛手段です。なぜなら、贖罪はあなたが作った仕組みではないからです。

　The Atonement principle was in effect long before the Atonement began.
　贖罪の原理は、贖罪が始まるはるか以前から効力を有していました。

　The principle was love and the Atonement was an act of love.
　贖罪の原理は愛であったし、贖罪は愛の作用でした。

　Acts were not necessary before the separation, because belief in space and time did not exist.
　分離以前には、愛が作用する必要はありませんでした。なぜなら、分離以前には空間と時間についての信念など存在しなかったからです。

　It was only after the separation that the Atonement and the conditions necessary for its fulfillment were planned.
　贖罪と贖罪を達成するために必要な条件が構想されたのは、分離以後のことにすぎません。

　Then a defense so splendid was needed that it could not be misused, although it could be refused.
　分離のあと、拒絶される余地はあっても、誤用される余地のない盤石な防衛手段が必要となりました。

　Refusal could not, however, turn it into a weapon of attack, which is the inherent characteristic of other defenses.
　しかも、ほかの防衛手段は本来的な特質として、攻撃のための武器に転用しうる性質を備えているのに対して、この防衛手段は、それを用いることを拒絶することはできても、攻撃のための武器に転じてしまうことだけはあってはならないことでした。

　The Atonement thus becomes the only defense that is not a two-edged sword.
　こうして、贖罪は諸刃の剣ではない唯一の防衛手段となりました。

　It can only heal.
　贖罪には、ただ癒すことしかできないからです。



5. The Atonement was built into the space-time belief to set a limit on the need for the belief itself, and ultimately to make learning complete.
　贖罪が時空の信念の中に組み込まれたのは、時空という信念それ自体の必要性に制限を設けて、最終的に学びを完了させるためでした。

　The Atonement is the final lesson.
　贖罪は、その最終レッスンのことです。

　Learning itself, like the classrooms in which it occurs, is temporary.
　学習それ自体、学びの起こる場である教室と同じように過渡的なものです。

　The ability to learn has no value when change is no longer necessary.
　学ぶための能力は、もはや変化する必要がなくなれば、何の価値も持たなくなります。

　The eternally creative have nothing to learn.
　永遠に創造し続けるものには、何も学ぶべきことなどありません。

　You can learn to improve your perceptions, and can become a better and better learner.
　あなたは、自分の知覚力を向上させるために学ぶことができるし、ますますよりよい学習者になることができます。

　This will bring you into closer and closer accord with the Sonship;
　あなたが学習することで、あなたは神の子本来の姿との一致に向けてどんどん近づいて調和してゆくでしょう。

　but the Sonship itself is a perfect creation and perfection is not a matter of degree.
　しかし、全体としての神の子そのものは、完全に創造されているのであって、完全であることには程度は問題になりません。

　Only while there is a belief in differences is learning meaningful.
　学びが意味を持つのは、ただ相違の存在が信じられている間に限ってのことなのです。



6. Evolution is a process in which you seem to proceed from one degree to the next.
　進化とは、あなたがある段階から次の段階へと進んでゆくように思えるプロセスのことです。

　You correct your previous missteps by stepping forward.
　あなたは、自分が以前に踏み誤ったことを、前向きに踏み出すことによって修正します。

　This process is actually incomprehensible in temporal terms, because you return as you go forward.
　時間の観点から見ると、このプロセスは実に不可解です。なぜなら、あなたは前進するたびに元に戻ってゆくわけだからです。

　The Atonement is the device by which you can free yourself from the past as you go ahead.
　贖罪は、あなたが前進するにつれて、過去からあなた自身を解放できるようにするための仕組みです。

　It undoes your past errors, thus making it unnecessary for you to keep retracing your steps without advancing to your return.
　贖罪はあなたの過去の誤りを取り消し、そうすることで、あなたが自らの歩んだ道をあと戻りし続けなくても、あなたが元に戻るために前進できるようにしてくれます。

　In this sense the Atonement saves time, but like the miracle it serves, does not abolish it.
　この意味で、贖罪は時間を省きますが、贖罪に奉仕する奇跡と同じように、時間を完全に廃することはありません。

　As long as there is need for Atonement, there is need for time.
　贖罪が必要であるかぎり、時間も必要なのです。

　But the Atonement as a completed plan has a unique relationship to time.
　ただし、完了した計画としての贖罪は、時間と独特の関係を持っています。

　Until the Atonement is complete, its various phases will proceed in time, but the whole Atonement stands at time's end.
　贖罪が完了するまでは、贖罪のさまざまな局面は、時間の中で進行してゆきます。しかし、完了した贖罪全体は、時間の終りにあります。

　At that point the bridge of return has been built.
　その時間の終点には、帰還のための橋が架けられています。



7. The Atonement is a total commitment.
　贖罪とは、全身全霊を捧げることです。

　You may still think this is associated with loss, a mistake all the separated Sons of God make in one way or another.
　あなたはまだ、自らを捧げて献身することが犠牲を払って損をすることになると考えてしまうかもしれません。このように贖罪を損失と結びつけて考えるのは、分離した神の子たちがどうしても犯してしまう思い違いです。

　It is hard to believe a defense that cannot attack is the best defense.
　攻撃できない防衛手段が最大の防御であると信じるのは容易ではありません。

　This is what is meant by "the meek shall inherit the earth. "
　しかし、これこそが、「柔和な者が地を継ぐであろう」との言葉が意味していたことです。

　They will literally take it over because of their strength.
　柔和な者たちは、持前の力強さのゆえに、文字どおり地を受け継ぐことでしょう。

　A two-way defense is inherently weak precisely because it has two edges, and can be turned against you very unexpectedly.
　攻守両面に使える防衛手段は本質的に弱さを孕んでいます。それはまさに諸刃を持っているからであって、まったく思いがけずに、あなたに刃を向けてくることがありうるからです。

　This possibility cannot be controlled except by miracles.
　奇跡によってしか、この危険性を牽制することはできません。

　The miracle turns the defense of Atonement to your real protection, and as you become more and more secure you assume your natural talent of protecting others, knowing yourself as both a brother and a Son.
　奇跡は、贖罪という防衛手段をあなたの真の防護のために方向づけてくれます。そして、あなたがますます安全になるにつれて、あなたは、自分たちが兄弟であるとともに神の子でもあるとわかってくるので、他者を擁護するという天賦の才をわがものとするでしょう。
